Why Drapes Don't Belong in a Washing Machine
A drapery panel is several materials sewn together: face fabric, lining, sometimes an interlining, stiff buckram in the header, and weights in the hem. Water shrinks each layer at a different rate. That’s how you end up with puckered seams and a lining hanging below the face fabric. Consumer Reports recommends dry cleaning any drape with stitched-in pleats or swags for this reason.
Custom drapes carry extra risk. They’re usually sewn from bulk fabric that is rarely pre-shrunk and isn’t held to the same FTC shrinkage guidelines as clothing. Solvent cleaning doesn’t swell fibers, so panels keep their length and pleat shape.

Solvent cleaning keeps shrinkage to a minimum. Natural fibers and untreated bulk fabric can still relax slightly, which is why we note panel length during inspection and flag any risk before cleaning.
